Frampton girl's 10th birthday 10k raises cash for NHS charities
A FRAMPTON Cotterell girl has raised more than £1,000 for NHS charities by doing a 10k run in her garden on her 10th birthday.
Lily Howse was inspired to run around her garden to raise money for the NHS after hearing about a man from France who ran a marathon on his 7m-wide balcony.
Lily’s family marked out an 80-metre course around her garden and calculated that she needed to do 125 laps to complete the 10,000m distance.
Mum Wendy set up a JustGiving page online and nominated NHS Charities Together, which is supporting NHS staff, volunteers and patients affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
Lily trained by running in the garden, completing at least 30 laps at a time, and by exercising with online sessions fun by fitness guru Joe Wicks every morning, as well as attending karate lessons remotely using online platform Zoom.
Wendy used her Facebook page to spread the word and encouraged family and friends to sponsor Lily, who took on the challenge on her birthday yesterday.
Wendy said: “She had a phone call with Chris Evans on his Virgin Radio Breakfast Show as the ‘what are you doing for the first time today’ slot, which was very exciting.
“Chris and his team sang her happy birthday and gave her a fanfare.”
After opening her presents and having pancakes for breakfast, Lily started her 10k, with family members running 20 laps each with her to keep her company.
She completed the run in an hour and 25 minutes, with a Facebook live video feed enabling supporters to keep up.
Lily takes a well-earned rest
Wendy said: “She was determined to complete the whole distance without stopping – and she did!”
Lily had an initial target of £500 but by the end of the day she had reached £945, and this morning Chris Evans added £55 to take the total to £1,000 when he called her on air to check how she had got on.
Lily said: “I felt very proud and pleased that I have done it.”
Wendy added: “This will definitely be a birthday to remember. Lily is really grateful for all the lovely comments she has received and is really pleased that she has raised some money for the NHS.”
